The arched-ceiling sauna
combines
the best properties of the
bronze-age ground sauna and
the
Roman sauna

The massive structure and the arched shape of the ceiling of the kiln sauna built of concrete aggregate blocks do not at first hearing necessarily sound like the ingredients for a traditional Finnish sauna.

However, the kiln sauna makes full use of all the best properties of the ancient Finnish ground sauna.

Thanks to the massive structure of the sauna and the robust stove, the smooth steam can be enjoyed for up to 20 hours after the heating has finished! Heating up the sauna takes no longer than 2 hours.

The essence of extended sauna-bathing cannot be praised too highly, because the longer time the sauna remains hot the cleaner and more enjoyable the steam vapour is.

Moreover, heating of a sauna made of stone is safe.

The arched-ceiling sauna makes use of shapes familiar from Roman spas. Thanks to these shapes, the steam vapour in the arched-ceiling sauna becomes incredibly smooth and the circulation of air inside the sauna is optimised.

One of the undisputed advantages of the arched ceiling is its ability to merge the sauna into the surrounding terrain in a completely natural way.

What on earth is
a kiln sauna?

The massive two-in-one stove makes it possible to use the arched-ceiling sauna both as a smoke sauna and as an ordinary sauna with chimney flue.

This results in a completely new sauna innovation in which the visitor can enjoy unprecedentedly smooth steam vapour in a unique environment.

This solution also resolves the thousands-of-years-old problem with smoke saunas, that of fire safety. The structure of the arched-ceiling saunas is non-combustible. You can erect them on the building site just like any sauna because the special requirements, i.e. the minimum distance to borders with the neighbours and to other buildings, do not apply to them.

Vapour-permeable
building block

The concrete aggregate blocks used by Holvisaunat Oy are of vapour-permeable material. They allow the thermal energy and moisture in the ground permeate through.
Thanks to the vapour-permeability no harmful condensate is formed on the surface of the structures, as would be the case were a cast concrete structure used.
The finished surface does not need to be floated.

Advantages of
the kiln sauna

  • Fire safety
  • Regulations that apply to the location and safety distances for the
    smoke sauna
    do not apply to
    the location of the
    kiln sauna.
  • Thanks to the arched ceiling structure
    the steam is unprecedently
    smooth.
  • As the surface temperature of the sauna walls does not rise higher than +60 C, also the sauna benches will not get burning hot. The low surface temperature does not impede having a hot sauna-bath though.
  • The heating is easy.
As it is possible to heat the kiln sauna from the outside, the person in charge of the heating never needs to breath harmful flue gases or have their eyes irritated by the smoke.
  • Since the
    flue gases
created during heating may be sucked out utilizing the chimney effect created by the arched ceiling, much less soot accumulates on the walls of the kiln sauna compared with an ordinary smoke sauna.
  • Once properly heated, the kiln sauna will remain good for bathing for at least 12 hours even in severe frost. Many users say that they have enjoyed the heat even 20 hours after the heating was finished.
