The testing of the smoke sauna owned by
Teuvo Askonen beside the Lake Pyhäjärvi in Mannila, Eura proved
conclusively that this type of sauna really works! The steam-bath in the kiln
sauna built into the hillside provided the testers with a sauna experience
that really astonished them!
The transport
entrepreneur and devoted fire-fighter Mr Teuvo Askonen from Eura, admits that
he too was quite amazed after erecting the smoke sauna delivered by
Holvisaunat Oy and taking his first bath in it:
-I was quite surprised that the sauna worked so well without panelling of the
inner walls, he recalls. -In fact, I was really astonished. The smoothness of
the steam vapour was unmatched.
Being an experienced
fire-fighter, Teuvo Askonen has had to put out quite a few smoke sauna fires
in his time. Did the fact that the sauna is non-combustible tip the balance
for him when choosing our sauna?
- I must admit that to some extent it did, he says.
-The best thing with this sauna though is the steam!

I must admit that Teuvo
Askonen was not exaggerating one bit when he praised the bathing properties
of his sauna. The testers were 100% unanimous about this. The smoothness of
the steam vapour really was unmatched.
Since the sauna ventilation operates so well, you can stay on the platform
virtually as long as you like. We were in no hurry, and so we were able to sit
in peace listening quietly to the hissing of the stove, feeling the moist
heat rising gently up from the stove and the mild scent of smoke in our nose.
The feeling was truly overwhelming! Quoting the words of Field-Marshal
Mannerheim, one could say:
-Brothers, many are the saunas where I´ve bathed in my life, but never was
there one which could rival this!
When the International
Sauna Club later on awarded Holvisaunat Oy/Jari Ruusunen the title of
sauna-innovator, it based its decision on the way that the company had
applied some thoroughly modern solutions to the problems involved in building
one of the oldest known sauna-types, the ground sauna. In addition, the
club´s test-group praised the benefit that no drops of condensed water formed
on the sauna ceiling.
These are all important
issues, but perhaps the essence of the sauna is best summed up by the
following line in the diploma:
"Bathing in this sauna was a delightful experience"
What more can one say. Bathing in this sauna is an overwhelming experience !

After such a glowing endorsement, I too had no alternative but to go and try
out the smoke sauna of Teuvo Askonen. So, off with the clothes and into the
steam-bath!
This time I had to admit that I was visiting the sauna along with some more
distinguished people than myself. I noticed that at the same time a
seven-person delegation from the International Smoke Sauna Club led by
its president, was also testing out the smoke sauna of Holvisaunat Oy. In
addtion on the sauna platform was Mr Pekka Palomäki the editor of
"Meidän Mökki" magazine, a man familiar to me for a long time who
has certainly tested many saunas over the years.
