The Lady

The woman depicted is a real lady. I took her picture in 1992 with Leica M6 and f:2.8/135 mm Elmarit-M lens and if I remember right the exposure - with Fujichrome 100 - was about the slowest I could manage handheld at 1/60th of a second and f:2.8. The lady was indoors and in front of a light coloured wall and the light came from the right so her face was in shadow. I knew that I could not get sufficient detail for her face so I asked her to turn her face to the light but she declined.

So as expected the face was badly underexposed and very dark, with hardly any detail. I first tried to save the pictures by copying them onto regular print film with my trusty Pentax LX, bellows and EL Nikkor f:4/50 mm enlarging lens - and Fujicolor 100. The results were a bit better but still totally unacceptable.

Then the idea hit me - why not try to make a silhouette of this profile. I enlarged the darkest print with a copy machine and after a few cycles I had a black silhouette on a white background. From this I made several copies on yellow paper - of these I chose the best one which I photographed on Fujichrome again. As even this version was somewhat lacking in contrast I photographed it one more time on Fujichrome and from this slide I had Cibachrome prints made - in the end the model was quite pleased with the result.

When seeing this image many people ask whether it is a picture of a real person or just a cardboard silhouette. IŽll tell them the story and add that cutting cardboard would have been a much easier way to do it. If you want to see what she really looks like the link is HERE.
