Rock singer

This image from 1987 is one of my few attempts at rock photography. I have photographed some jazz concerts but as I soon found out thatīs completely different.

The guy in the picture calls himself Ressu Redford and he was the lead singer in a Finnish rock group - now defunct - who called themselves Bogart &co. They were extremely popular at the time and the singer is still active today.

They performed in a school near by and I decided to try and get some pictures. The benefit of living in a small town is that when I bought the ticket, went in and asked the organizers that if I do a story for our local paper, could I take some pictures. I got the permission and unlimited access to the sides and back of the stage - and front too, naturally. And I did the story for the paper, of course.

Standing between the loudspeaker towers I took this picture with my Leica M6 and Summicron 90 mm f:2.0 lens. Exposure was 1/60 at f:2.8. Film is Ektachrome 200.

It was not an easy shot. The lighting was changing constantly and - which was worse - all the members of the band were jumping around a lot all of the time. So I had to first measure the light to get some idea of the exposure and I found out that in the front of the stage where the microphones were the light level - although of several colours - was relatively stable. Then I had to set correct focus and I found out that when singing the singer would be almost still for a couple of seconds at a time.

So I moved around the stage trying to get images that were in focus and correctly exposed and to my surprise about 18 or half of the 36 images in the roll of film were usable. I tried to use flash a couple of times but the results were totally useless - no atmosphere at all.
